The type species (holotype) of the genus Histioneis is Histioneis remora F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parahistioneis reticulata (Kofoid) Kofoid & Skogsberg.

Adjective (Latin), reticulate, netted, marked with a network (Stearn 1973).
