Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Type Information
Type locality: Pasabander, South coast of Iran; (Attaran-Fariman et al. 2007: 647) Holotype: March 2004; Coastal sediments; (Attaran-Fariman et al. 2007: 647) Notes: Holotype: Fig.2; from culture strain GYPC 102. The type culture is maintained at the Univ. of Tasmania, School of Aquaculture Laboratories, Launceston.
Description
Cells biconical to ovoid, slightly dorsoventrally compressed, 28-36 microns long, 17-27 microns wide, and 15-21 microns deep. Cingulum equatorially placed and descending, deeply excavated, displaced approximately one fifth of the cell length. Sulcus wide in the hypocone, narrowing in the intercingular region, and extending approximately two thirds of the ventral epicone as a straight narrow groove. Apical groove horseshoe-shaped, extending from near the anterior sulcus and around the apex in anticlockwise direction. Nucleus large, ovoid to tear-shaped, positioned in the right side of the cell, extending from the middle of the hypocone to near the apex. Chloroplasts yellow-brown and peripherally placed, irregular to ribbon-like in shape. Resting cysts trapezoidal to subrectangular in outline and dorsoventrally compressed; 26-34 microns long, 20-27 microns wide, 8-10 microns deep. Cytoplasm globular and colourless wih an orange-yellow accumulation body; cyst wall pale-brown to purple-brown, covered with a raised polygonal reticulum arranged after the pattern of the cingulum, sulcus and amphiesmal vesicles of the vegetation cell. Paracingular width approximately one fourth of the cyst length. Archeopyle chasmic, with variable orientation.
