Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Karlodinium is Karlodinium micrum (B.Leadbeater & J.D.Dodge) J.Larsen.

Type Information
Type locality: Southern Ocean (53º22'S, 144º53'E) to the south of the polar front; (Salas et al. 2008: 250) Holotype: Fig. 7 (epitype) March 2006; Water temperature of 6ºC; 250, 242 (Salas et al. 2008: 250) Notes: Holotype: Fig. 7, of clonal culture KDGSO08, deposited in the Univ. of Tasmania's Collection of Microalgae; also comprises the 28S rDNA sequence stored under GenBank accession number EF469233.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells small, biconical to pentagonal in outline, 13-21 microns long and 11-17 microns wide. Epicone conical with parallel longitudinal furrows. Apical groove of medium length, originating above the anterior end of the sulcus and extending 1/4 of the way down the dorsal epicone. Ventral pore a thin, long slit located well to the left of the sulcal region. Hypocone conical or hemispherical, often truncated by the sulcus. Cingulum wide and deeply excavated, with prominent margins, displaced 1/4 of the cell length. Sulcus deeply excavated, especially in the hypocone, left margin often folding over as a flap, with a long, finger-like extension into the epicone. Chloroplasts few large, clustered in a group on the left side of the cell. Nucleus large and occupying most of the right side of the cell.

Habitat
Wide temperature tolerance (6ºC, 17ºC).
