Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Karlodinium is Karlodinium micrum (B.Leadbeater & J.D.Dodge) J.Larsen.

Type Information
Type locality: Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia; (Salas et al. 2008: 251) Holotype: Fig. 8 (epitype) March 2006; 251, 242 (Salas et al. 2008: 251) Notes: Holotype: Fig. 8 from clonal culture KDDSB01, deposited in the Univ. of Tasmania's Collection of Microalgae; also comprises the 28S rDNA sequence stored under GenBank accession number EF469236.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells ellipsoidal, 18-25 microns long and 13-19 microns wide, a little dorsoventrally flattened. Epicone and hypocone hemispherical, with conspicuous slit-like ventral pore above the sulcus. Cingulum shallow and wide, displaced approximately 1/3 of the cell length. Sulcus narrow with a clearly visible tube-shaped structure in the intercingular region. Sulcal extension into the epicone an inconspicuous fold. Apical groove linear, originating parallel to the level of the apical margin of the cingulum and extending to halfway down the dorsal epicone. Many chloroplasts arranged peripherally into bands, in spiral on the epicone, containing internal pyrenoids. Nucleus large and central, closer to the dorsal surface.

Habitat
Environmental water temperatures: from 8.95ºC to 19.6ºC.
