The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Antithamnionella elegans (Berthold) J.H.Price & D.M.John.
Type Information
Type locality: Golfo di Napoli, Italy; (Silva & al. 1996: 380) Notes: "Provisional lectotype": "Funk's (1922, pl. V: fig. 17) illustration". This illustration is based on Bethold's original material (Athanasidis 1996: 113).

Adjective B (Latin), elegant (Stearn 1973).
