The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Xiphosiphonia pinnulata (Kützing) Savoie & G.W.Saunders.

Type locality: "Genua!" [Genoa, Italy]; (Kützing 1843: 146) Lectotype: Pl. 23: figs a-d in Kützing, 1863 (fide Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 379): (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: The name has been lectotypified Maggs & Hommersand (1983: 379) with Kützing, Tab. Phycol. 13: pl. 23 a–d, as "type material is apparently missing".
