The type species (lectotype) of the genus Penium is Penium margaritaceum Brébisson ex Ralfs.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium navicula (Brébisson) Lütkemüller.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
