The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara globularis Thuiller.

Type locality: Pond at Chiba University, Yayoi, Inage, Chiba, Japan; (Sakayama et al. 2009: 926) Holotype: Y. Tanabe; freshwater pond; TNS; TNS-Al 164558 (Sakayama et al. 2009: 926) Notes: Maintained as the culture strain (M.Ito, strain TAN136).
