Type locality: Jinyutan, Tongliang, Chongqing, China (Xie, Shi & Wang 2004: 884). Holotype: Zhu Haoran; Feb. 5, 1946; HBI (Xie, Shi & Wang 2004: 884).

Adjective A (Latin), thick (Stearn 1973).

This is a freshwater species.
Plant is rigid, 9-13 cm long, attenuated upwards and narrowed downwards at the base into a long stalk, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 0.5-0.7 mm in diameter; unbranched; nodes are inflated, 1.5-3.0 mm in diameter and internodes are 0.8-1.2 mm in diameter. Carposporangia are large, cylindrical- obovate, elliptical or dumbbell-shaped, single, 90- 120 µm long, 50-80 µm in diameter. Spermatangia are in patches, 5- 6 per node, obviously prominent.
