The type species (lectotype) of the genus Closterium is Closterium lunula Ehrenberg & Hemprich ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Closterium lunula var. nordstedtii G.J.P.Ramos, C.E.M.Bicudo & C.W.N.Moura.
