Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Echinella is Echinella radiosa Acharius.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymbella acuta (Lyngbye) C.Agardh.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), acute, pointed; i.e. narrowing gradually and making an angle of less than 90° (Stearn 1973).
