John et al. (2004) cite Dermatolithon corallinae (P. Crouan & H. Crouan) Foslie, Lithothamnion corallinae (P. Crouan & H. Crouan) Heydr. and Titanoderma corallinae (P. Crouan & H. Crouan) Heydr. as synonyms of this species. “Some have chosen to place the taxon under Titanoderma (see Hardy & Guiry, 2003), but we have followed Woelkerling et al. (1998) in keeping the species under Lithophyllum.” (John et al., 2004).

Distributional notes
According to Womersley (1996) this species is probably widespread but he notes that many records outside Europe require confirmation [see Chamberlain (1991) and Woelkerling & Campbell (1992)].

Habitat notes

General environment
This is a marine species.

Found on rock, snails, limpets, abalone shells and sea urchins in intertidal pools, on reef edges and subtidally to depths of 9 m (Womersley 1996: 233). Grows mainly on Corallina officinalis and is common in rock pools from mid tide level downwards; also grows on Laminaria digitata, Cystoseira baccata, Pterocladia capillacea, Furcellaria lumbricalis (sometimes on Melobesia membranacea), Chondrus crispus, Palmaria palmata, Laurencia pinnatifida and Polysiphonia nigrescens (Chamberlain 1991: 69).
