The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulva howensis (A.H.S.Lucas) Kraft

Type information
Holotype locality: Lighthouse Reef, Point Lonsdale, Victoria (Kraft, Kraft & Waller: 1274). Holotype (fig. 9A): S. Gould, C. Jackson, J. Ackland & L. Kraft; -50 cm on a midintertidal calcarenite reef flat. MELU KA032 (Kraft, Kraft & Waller: 1274).
