The type species (holotype) of the genus Licmophora is Licmophora argentescens C.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: Semau Sound, Malay Archipelago; (Lobban et al. 2011: 21) Type: Dr Aurivillius; littoral; (Lobban et al. 2011: 21) Notes: Malay Archipelago, Semau Sound, Gaspar Sound, Sumba, Timor (INA). Lobban et al> (2011: fig. 34) provide a reproduction of Cleve's (1901: fig. 2) drawings of Licmophora aurivillii. Lobban et al. (2011: 21) note that Cleve received material, collected by Dr Aurivillius, on loan from the 'Rijksmuseum' of Stockholm via a Prof. Hj. Théel (Cleve 1901), but a recent search of the crytogamic and fossil collections by staff at the Swedish Museum of Natural History did not locate either a type slide or the remainder of Aurivillius's material.
