Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia indigena Hollenberg

Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1973).
