The type species (holotype) of the genus Plocamium is Plocamium vulgare J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium telfairiae (W.J.Hooker & Harvey) Harvey ex Kützing.

Syntype localities: Ko-tosho (Tai-wan), Ryukyu, etc., common along coasts of Pacific and Japan Sea; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Adjective (Latin), abnormal (Stearn 1973).
