Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrosigma is Gyrosigma hippocampus Hassall.
Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Description
Valve lanceolate with relatively broad apices, 120-200 µm long, 18-30 µm wide. Raphe sternum ± median, central area small, oval. This species is very similar to Gy. acuminatum except that the striation is coarser in Gy. rautenbachiae circa 14-16 in 10 µm, with the longitudinal striae very slightly finer than the transverse. The central raphe fissures of Gy. rautenbachiae cross the striae, which has never been seen in Gy. acuminatum. This can often just be observed in the LM. However, the apical structure of Gy. rautenbachiae is totally different from that of Gy. acuminatum: one row of areolae runs around the apex (which is not the case in Gy. acuminatum) and is paralleled by a very long row of microforamina. The latter can just be seen in the LM if the valve is favourably oriented but is immediately evident in SEM. The long row of areolae that runs around the apex is clearly visible in the LM, however.
Similar Species
The species may have been confused with Gy. acuminatum and its distribution may not be limited to South Africa.
