Description
Frond dark brown, about 9 cm tall, holdfast cylindrical, 3 cm long, 1.4 cm in diameter, several flabella arising from the holdfast, lateral flabellum adhering to each other below the middle part, usually vertically splitting to the middle part, forming lobes, slightly denticular at the apices, zonate on the surface and lacking stipe. Filaments of flabellum dichotomously branched, and constrictions above the forks, sometimes secondary constriction also present. Cortical filament tapering in surface, with pseudocortex, clavate at the apex, cortical filaments of the lower part of the flabellum irregularly torulose, sometimes cylindrical, 17-30 µm in diameter, but near the surface, thin, 7-20 µm in diameter; cortical filament of the middle part of the flabellum cylindrical, sometimes torulose,13-25 µm in diameter, but near the surface, thin, 7-16 µm in diameter; cortical filament of the upper part of the flabellum cylindrical, 10-20 µm in diameter, but near the surface, thin, usually torulose, 5-13 µm in diameter.

It is closely related to Avrainvillea obscura (C. Agardh) J. Agardh but differing in its apices being slightly denticular, and zonate on the surface, and with pseudocortex. Three other species are newly recorded for the first time from China, Avrainvillea amadelpha (Mont.) A. Gepp et E.S.Gepp, A. hollenbergii Trono and A. obscura (C. Agardh) J. Agardh.
