The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mastocarpus is Mastocarpus mammillosus (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.

Holotype locality: Pyramid Point, Monterey County, California (Lindstrom et al. 2011: 671). Holotype: W.A.Setchell, 1666; 18 May 1897; UC 93733 (Lindstrom et al. 2011: 671). Notes: Isotypes distributed as Phycotheca Boreali-Americana (PB-A) 427 (Setchell & Gardner 1933: 290, as 'cotypes').
