Type locality: Island Bay near Wellington, New Zealand; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 139) Lectotype: W.A.Setchell; vi.1904; uppermost sublittoral zone, on Ulva; TRH; A16-1003 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 139) Notes: "Collection includes packet and two small boxes with conceptacle bearing fragments,
one of which was rediscovered during the present study. Accompanying annotation
slip marked ‘Herbarium of the University of California’ [UC] and 'on Ulva'. Packet
marked ‘Melob. Lithophyllum explanatum. Boxes marked 'L. explanatum'. Slide marked
‘Melobesia explanatum paa [= on] Ulva’. Locality on collection boxes mistakenly given as
‘Bay of Island’ but in protologue (Foslie 1906b: 26) and on prepared slide correctly given
as ‘Island Bay’. Incorrect locality data from boxes also repeated in Adey & Lebednik
1967: 36 and Woelkerling 1993: 88, both of whom were unaware of prepared slide]" (Woelkering et al. 2005: 139).
