The intended source of the name, presumably Phormidium versicolor Wartmann, is an invalid pre-starting-point name dating to 1861 for a plant included in the exsiccata Die Algen Europa's. The binomial Heteroleibleinia versicolor is attributed by Komárek & Anagnostidis (2005: 252) to Gomont (1893) where the name obviously does not appear. Phormidium versicolor "(Wartmann) in Rabenhorst 1861 ex Gomont 1892" appears later in the same work, perhaps with a different concept (Komárek & Anagnostidis 2005: 442); however, both names have their origins in Wartmann's exsiccata. - (1 Apr 2014) - M.D. Guiry
