The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Type locality: "De Norske fjorde" [Norwesgian fjord] (Müller 1780: pl. 828). (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 14). Notes: Lectotype: illustration in Flora danica (O.F. Müller 1780, pl. 828, fig. 1) selected by Athanasiadis in Maggs and Hommersand (1993: 14).

Adjective (Latin), woolly.
