The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spirogyra is Spirogyra porticalis (O.F.Müller) Dumortier.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Temnogyra esthonica (Skuja) Yamagishi.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), dotted, marked with dots, spots, minute glands, etc. (Stearn 1973).
