The type species (holotype) of the genus Prorocentrum is Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg.

Type locality: Ship Channel, Port Aransas, Texas, USA (27º50'17"N, 97º03'01"W) (Henrichs et al. 2013: 146). Holotype: marine, planktonic. Type Collection of Dinoflagellates, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution catal. number 5142; slide of isolate "PrTX B" (Kim & al. 2013: 146). Notes: Isotypes: Fixed material of isolate "PrTX B" deposited in the Texas A & M University S.M. Tracy Herbarium: accession nos. 264776-01, 264776-02, 264776-03 and in the Type Collection of Dinoflagellates, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, catalog numbers 5150, 5151, and 5152 with associated SEM images (figs 2a-2c).
