According to Moestrup & Calado (2018: 369), "Gymnodinium meervalli Redeke (1919, p. 128, figs 1, 2) was described as a colorless flagellate with a bright red eyespot, very similar to O. fastigata. It differs mainly in the position of the nucleus, stated to be in the epicone, and in the variable shape of the slightly metabolic tip of the epicone. Further observations are needed to determine whether it constitutes a separate species [from Opisthoaulax fastigata (B. Kirchhoff & Barbara Meyer) Calado 2011]. - (26 Oct 2018) - M.D. Guiry
