Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cladostephus is Cladostephus spongiosus (Hudson) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata australis (C.Agardh) Kuntze

Type information
Type locality: "Ad Novam Hollandiam" (one of three possible localities in Western Australia: Geographe Bay, Cape Leeuwin, or King George Sound (Silva & al. 1996: 477). Type: Mus. Paris (Parsons 1980: 278). Notes: Lectotype: (Parsons) PC. Isolectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD, 41993.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1985).

According to Silva et al. (1996) this species is a taxonomic synonym of Cladostephus spongiosus forma verticillatus (Lightfoot) Prud’Homme van Reine.
