The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herposiphonia filipendula (Harvey ex J.Agardh) Falkenberg ex De Toni.

Lectotype locality: Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 497) Lectotype: LD, Herb. Agardh; 39142 (Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 193D) (Womersley 2003: 297) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Harvey in Kützing (1864: 13). Isolectotype in MEL, 45810 (Womersley, 2003).
