Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herposiphonia rostrata (Sonder) Reinbold.

Type locality: Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 499) Holotype: MEL; 45839 (Womersley 2003: 295) Notes: Type locality: probably near Fremantle (Womersley, 2003).
