The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cocconeis is Cocconeis scutellum Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cocconeis matsii (Al-Handal, Riaux-Gobin & Wulff) Riaux-Gobin, Compère, O.E.Romero & D.M.Williams.

Adjective (Latin), with leaflets arranged on each side of a common petiole.
