Type locality: "The Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia."; (Smida & al. 2014: 61) Notes: "Holotype: Slide of the rinsed frutules of strain BD2 deposited at
the herbarium of the National History Museum of Copenhagen,
Denmark, registered as C2487.
Isotype: Fixed material of BD2 deposited at the herbarium of the
National History Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark, registered
as C2488."
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Cells with two yellow-brownish chloroplasts, one in
each end. Cells rectangular in girdle view. Valves linear to
lanceolate with parallel valve margins in middle part. Valves
32-82 µm long, 1.4-2.9 µm wide. External surface of the
frustule smooth. Uniseriate striae 4453 in 10 µm. Round-oval
areolae, 3.9-7.7 in 1 µm, with hymen close to the external
surface. Hymen perforated by circularly arranged pores along
the hymen margin, internally more chaotic. Interstriae raised
above the internal plane of striae. Mantles structured as the
valve face, 1-2 poroids high. Extremely eccentric canal raphe.
Wall of canal raphe perforated by areolae. Fibulae irregularly
spaced, 7-19 in 10 µm. Two central fibulae with larger
interspace than remaining fibulae, corresponding to the
central nodule. Raphe slit ends in simple central raphe endings.
Internal distal raphe endings end in helictoglossa, forming an
excrescence. Outer distal raphe endings extend to cell end and
curve towards the side of the valve forming a hook.
Epicingulum comprises 2-10 open bands. Each band contains
1-2 longitudinal rows of areolae, 5-12 areolae in 1 µm in the
valvocopula. In the most distal band, areolae are more
irregularly spaced.
