The type species (holotype) of the genus Plumaria is Plumaria elegans (Bonnemaison) F.Schmitz.

Type Information
Type locality: "In Oceano pacifico ad Insulam Vancouver" [Vancouver Island, Canada]; (Agardh 1876: 76) Type: LD?; (Yoshida 1998: 930) Notes: Despite the clear locality citation in J. Agardh, according to Dawson (1962: 75) the type consists of a collection by Capt. Pike, labeled "Ptilota californica var. concinna" in Herb. Harvey, Trinity College, Dublin and the type locality is Golden Gate [San Francisco], California. Agardh makes no mention of this collection in his protologue. Lectotype information: Specimen Ag. no. 20018 in Agardh's Herbarium in LD, collected from Vancouver Island (Bruce & Saunders, 2016: 43).
