Published in: Huisman, J.M. (2002). The type and Australian species of the red algal genera Liagora and Ganonema (Liagoraceae, Nemaliales). Australian Systematic Botany 15: 773-838.
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ganonema is Ganonema farinosum (J.V.Lamouroux) K.-C.Fan & Y.-C.Wang.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hommersandiophycus clavatus (Yamada) Showe M.Lin & Huisman

Type locality: Miyako-Jima, Ryukyu (= Okinawa), Japan (Lin et al. 2014: 42). Holotype: SAP 20639 (Yoshida 1998: 517). Notes: Type specimen: a male plant, collected by Y. Yamada, 10 April 1935 (Lin et al. 2014: 42).

Adjective (Latin), clavate (Stearn 1973).
