Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Endocladia muricata (Endlicher) J.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: Ad insulam Sitcha lapidibus affixam legit :Kastalsky; ad Unalaschka: Merck; (Postels & Ruprecht 1840: 16) Notes: Dawson (1953: 95) indicated that the holotype has not been designated, and that syntypes of Kastalsky and of Merk, if extant, are probably in the Herbarium of the Botanical Garden of Leningrad, Russia. Two syntype localities indicated: Sitka Island and Unalaska, Alaska.

Adjective (Latin), covered wiith short, hard points.
