The type species (holotype) of the genus Pleonosporium is Pleonosporium borreri (Smith) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ptilothamnion codicola (E.Y.Dawson) I.A.Abbott.

Type locality: Extreme south tip of Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico; (Dawson 1962: 40) Holotype: 18 December 1949; endophytic in Codium fragile, intertidal; Herb. A. Hancock Foundation; E.Y. Dawson 8318 (Dawson 1962: 40) Notes: Dawson (1962: 40) notes that there is an isotype slide located in Herb. Beaudette Foundation.
