Michael Wynne (E-mail, October 2005) writes: 'I tried backtracking to see how this unfolded. The Farlow 1877 article that you cite I have before me, and on pg. 237, he has the entry "Polysiphonia dictyurus J. Ag." And under that he refers to "A single specimen, which we supposed to be new and to which we gave the manuscript name of P. clevelandii, seems to be a variety of P. dictyurus, in which the ramuli are very regularly pinnate and the ultimate ramuli all beautifully recurved. The number of cells in cross-section of the larger branches is ten."
I think that the problem is that although Farlow gave enough of a description to validate it, he failed to come out with the name "Polysiphonia dictyurus var. Clevelandii". It was never stated. "Polysiphonia ClevelandiiFarlow" was a nomen nudum in that Farlow et al. exsiccata. So in 1970 Hollenberg proposed Pterosiphonia clevelandii (Farlow) comb. nov.", but as he said in 1976, that variety clevelandii Farlow (1877) had not been validly published. So that is what led Hollenberg in this one-page note in Taxon to describe it under a totally different name, Pterosiphonia farlowii.'
This is a marine species.
