Type locality: San Juan, Puerto Rico, 28 May 1903, coll. M. A. Howe. (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 453). Holotype: M.A. Howe; 28.v.1903; lying free just below low tide mark. TRH 453 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 453). Notes: Part of holotype of Lithothamnion fruticulosum var. aemulans Foslie & Howe; partly in NY.
Origin of species name
Participle B (Latin), rivalling, more or less equalling (Stearn 1973).
