The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

Type locality: "Sediment core sample, taken from Lake Two-Yurts, Sredinny Mountains (Sredinnij Chrebet), NE Siberia, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, 56°49.005'N, 160°04.049'E, collected by Hoff, Diekmann and Müller, September 14th, 2007."; (Hoff & Lange-Bertalot 2011: 444) Holotype: FR; Lage-Bertalot Collection Slide RUS 47 (Hoff & Lange-Bertalot 2011: 444) Notes: "Specimen illustrated in Fig. 3, taken at a core depth of 149 cm."
