The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colacodasya inconspicua (Reinsch) F.Schmitz
Type locality: parasitic on Merenia microcladioides, South Georgia Island (Index Nominum Algarum).
