The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhopalodia is Rhopalodia gibba (Ehrenberg) O.Müller.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Epithemia ascoidea (O. Müller) Cocquyt & R.Jahn.

Type locality: Central Africa: Victoria Lake, Unjura Wami.; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: [Icon] Pl. 2 fig. 9 in Müller 1895: slide B 40 0042020 in B; valve representing the epitype illustated as Fig. 6 (epitype) (Cocquyt et al. 2018: 41, fig. 3) Notes: Locality of epitype: Nkhotakota, Lake Malawi, Malawi, (sample B 520000026). Habitat: mud on shore of LakeMalawi, on stalks.
