The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia superpaulensis (Hustedt) Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot.
