The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Feldmannia irregularis (Kützing) Hamel.

Type locality: Isipingo Beach, near Durban, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 565)
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), dwarf (Stearn 1973).
