The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sarcodia dentata (Suhr) R.E.Norris ex M.J.Wynne

Type locality: "Algoa-Bai" [Algoa Bay, Cape Province, South Africa] (Suhr 1834: 734). Lectotype: HBG (Wynne 1989: 427).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fleshy, succulent, soft but firm (Stearn 1973).
