The type species (holotype) of the genus Plocamium is Plocamium vulgare J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium mertensii (Greville) Harvey.

TYpe locality: Ad litus occidentale Novae Hollandiae [Western Australia] & ad Caput Bonae Spei [Cape of Good Hope] : unde specimina dederunt Desfontaines & Gaudichaud.; (Agardh 1822: 181) Notes: A lectotype locality of Western Australia was first selected by J.Agardh (1841: 10-11).

Adjective A (Latin), very tall, high (Brown 1946).
