Type locality: desert soil surface, Sevilleta LTER, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA (34°12'43.5"N, 106°45'28.5"W) [? see below*]; (Sciuto et al. 2015: 1182) Holotype: CONN; 00181061 (permanent slide of strain BCP-SEV3-VF49) (Sciuto et al. 2015: 1182) Notes: Iconotypes: fig. 1C (Lewis & Flechter, 2004) and fig. 7 (Sciuto et al., 2015). *The type locality cited for Scenedesmus rotundatus L.A. Lewis & Flechter, nom. inval. is San Nicolas Island, California, USA (Lewis & Flechter, 2004: 1134).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ratio of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1973).
