The type species (holotype) of the genus Heteronema is Heteronema marinum Dujardin.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Heteronema vetrovae Kapustin & D.Davydov.

Type locality: Ukraine, the Crimea, Simferopol district, in Salgir river near Zarechnoe village (Assaul-Vetrova, 24 Jul. 1969); it is conserved in the algotheca of M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine).; (Assaul-Vetrova 1981: 236)
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
