The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolapatha is Hydrolapatha sanguineum (Hudson) Stackhouse.

Type locality: Fremantle, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 458). Holotype: Clifton; TCD, Herb. Harvey Trav. Set 269 (Womersley 2003: 58).

Adjective (Latin), tree-like, resembling a tree in shape (Stearn 1973).
