Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Colaconema is Colaconema bonnemaisoniae Batters.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema asparagopsis Chemin.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), simple, undivided, unbranched, of one piece or series, not consisting of several distinct parts (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Frond microscopic, purplish red, filamentous, consisting of single row of cells, irregularly branched, creeping on the host plant, forming an irregular network between the cortical cells of the host. Cells variable in shape, generally oblong, simple, furcate or irregular, 3-10 microns in diam., 2-15 times as long as broad. Monosporangia simple, lateral or terminal on the cells of the filaments, subglobular, 6-10 microns in diam.
