The type species (holotype) of the genus Batrachospermum is Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sheathia confusa (Bory) Salomaki & M.L.Vis
Type locality: near Fougères, Brittany, France (Salomaki et al. 2014: 536). Notes: France; Spain; Germany; Poland; Russia (INA).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1973).
