The type species (holotype) of the genus Turnerella is Turnerella mertensiana (Postels & Ruprecht) F.Schmitz.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Schizymenia dubyi (Chauvin ex Duby) J.Agardh
Type locality: La Goureppe near Biarritz, France (Index Nominum Algarum).
