The type species (holotype) of the genus Ptilota is Ptilota plumosa C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plumaria plumosa (Hudson) Kuntze.

Adjective (Latin), sericeous, silky with long straight close-pressed glossy hairs (Stearn 1973).
